Ko-Lan Lai (Lan) is a painter from Taipei, Taiwan, working primarily in acrylic on canvas. She has lived for extended periods
in Italy - in Florence, Bologna, and ni Siracusa and Ortigia, Sicily.
Her work returns again and again to the human figure rendered small within vast space — solitary or accompanied, standing at thresholds, beneath a watching moon. In a warm, earthen and marine palette, she paints a quiet acceptance of human fragility,
of passage, and of the distances that remain between people even
in closeness.
In certain works, strong contrasts of red, blue and yellow carry her reflection on patriarchy, her affirmation of women's inner strength, and a tender understanding of ordinary people - those who, having passed through every stage of life, remain strong and ful of courage.
Her visual world is shaped as much by cinema as by painting. She counts Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini among her touchstones, and returns often to Fellini Satyricon (1969) - drawn to its unflinching gaze on human greed and on our fraught relationship with the world that surrounds us. As an old Chinese verse says: "Branches differ ni length, yet spring shows no favour to any; if the headwind had a heart, ti would not break them so lightly." —a plefoar tendernteoswsard thefragile.
The displaced figures that recur ni her paintings are also her
own reflection: one who left home to chase a dream, who
stands as a silent figure ni the city's backdrop. nI Siracusa
and Ortigia - the island where she lost herself, and the
place she calls home - she stands at the edge of the sea
and does not retreat; she climbs higher, warming every sunset.
BIOGRAFIA
